The 2024 edition of the Solidarity Day of the Education à la Citoyenneté et à la Solidarité Internationale (ECSI) network took place on April 25, 2024 at the Lycée Emilie de Rodat in Pezens, Aude. Thanks to the collaboration between 14 high schools in the CNEAP Occitanie network and the leadership of three ECSI correspondents, Yves CARMICHAEL, David BARATGIN and Marianne JOSE, the event brought together 300 students to discuss international solidarity actions. These actions have been carried out throughout the year by the students, many of them in partnership with the Fekama agricultural colleges in Madagascar.
The DREAP of the Occitanie region, Frédéric FAYE, and the deputy mayor, Christine ROGER, inaugurated the stage in the Pezens village hall to welcome all participants and launch the festivities. Students from the 14 schools then took to the stage to present their international solidarity actions and projects carried out in their schools since the start of the school year.
Among the actions presented by the students, some were common to several schools, such as the “Bol de Riz” operations and the sale of lavender essential oil. Some young people also mentioned participation in the AlimenTERRE Festival, solidarity meals, fund-raising drives and collections. These numerous solidarity actions feed the common objective of raising funds to support Fekama agricultural colleges, a partner organization of Fert and CNEAP in Madagascar.
The cheque for €8,723 presented to the Fert association, represented by its director Anne PANEL, corresponds to the total amount raised thanks to these initiatives; this sum is equivalent to the complete boarding school training of 12 young people, sons and daughters of farmers, for 1 year.
Although separated by more than 10,000 kilometers, the presence of the Malagasy students was felt in the creation of a dance choreography that was performed and repeated by the French students. The students then took part in a series of activities and workshops on the theme of “Humanity through water: a look at the blue gold from here and there”. Each school was able to prepare a variety of fun workshops on water-related issues, and offer them to their fellow students. These activities enabled young people to become actively and collectively involved, while raising their awareness of the value and use of water around the world.
Following in the footsteps of previous editions, everyone was able to admire the “Solisphere”, a beautiful representation of the many forms that solidarity actions can take. Each school created a slice, symbolizing unity and shared commitment.
Congratulations to all involved for this enriching and humane encounter.
